Baby’s nose blocked?

For the first few months of a baby’s life, they’re an ‘obligate nose breather’. Don’t worry, it’s not a derogatory term. It means they reflexively prefer breathing through their nose rather than the mouth. This is so their sensitive nasal tissue can act as a filter against pollutants, viruses and irritants, a self-defence mechanism especially important in early development. It goes without saying that it’s also critical airways are kept clear for feeding and sleeping purposes.

So when nasal passages become blocked or runny with excess mucus, not only is a baby’s natural ability to protect itself put under strain but it’s likely you’ll have an unhappy, unsettled and possibly quite hungry baby at the same time.

The good news is there are ways to help your baby breathe freely. One is a nasal aspirator or nasal suction bulb, also known as a ‘snot sucker!’, but these can be tricky to use on wriggly or upset babies, causing further stress to both your baby and you. Another option is a nasal spray or drops. Because medicated versions aren’t recommended for infants, your best bet is a saline solution. They’re particularly helpful when babies have colds or allergies because clearing a congested nose via saline means sticky, gunky mucus is thinned, pollutants and irritants can be washed out, nasal tissue remains moistened and finally, crusty, nasal scabbing is less likely. Just keep in mind if you use a saline nasal spray or drop you might notice your baby sniffs, sneezes or swallows immediately afterwards. This is a perfectly normal reaction that allows baby to naturally clear their airways.
